As many of you are aware NCSY recently launched an abstinence website, http://www.negiah.org. The site’s tagline, “It’s ok to say no, NCSY says know”, best expresses the purpose of this site- to have teens learn, research and understand this often unexamined topic. While NCSY prides itself on being an inspirational, rather than educational institution, we realized that there is a dangerous lack of discussion and information about this weighty topic in our communities.
NCSY is proud to be the first abstinence website for Jewish teens, filling a necessary void. I am the first to say that our site does not have all the answers (I don’t believe any site could), rather the goal of this site is to use the information and articles as a springboard to learn and discuss and to “know”. I must commend NCSY’s own Rabbi Jack Abramowitz for all of his erudite, well researched articles that compose the site and I am honored to have Rabbi Hershel Schachter and Rabbi Tzvi Hersh Weinreb endorse this site, recognizing the need for this topic to be discussed in a sensitive, halachic manner.
Due to NCSY’s commitment to provide our teens with the best information, we are tweaking the website and adding a FAQ’s page to suite the many requests and questions we have gotten about the site. I have been extremely gratified by all of the tremendous feedback NCSY has received and we are certainly taking everyone’s constructive criticism to heart. I truly believe NCSY is providing our community with a valuable resource with this site, and I was therefore very proud to read a comment from one mother who wrote to thank NCSY for creating the site, as she had been wanting to have a conversation about abstinence with her children for some time, but lacked any information or resource she felt comfortable with. I believe this site will fill the need for many parents and educators and I hope it continues to serve as a springboard to help people learn and talk about this sensitive, important issue.
This is a good issue. My son right now doesn’t have a problem with it. He’s just 13, but I would like more information about the site.
