The Annapolis Summit
This week I have been glued to my computer inhaling all of the news coverage and opinion pieces regarding the Annapolis Summit. Like many, I am nervous about Israel’s negotiations for peace and what direction all these talks will truly lead to. As I watched all of the proceedings I was particularly bothered by the Saudi representatives’ refusal to shake the hands of the Israelis. The Saudis maintain that they did not want to create a photo-op and somehow they were cheered for merely politely clapping at the conclusion of Prime Minister Olmert’s remarks. These tepid actions hardly seem to represent the commitment of invested peace partners.
To add further insult, at the Saudi Arabian Embassy the Israeli press was barred from the building, forcing them to film outside in the rain while all other press was welcome indoors. I can hardly comprehend how the Saudis can be taken seriously as partners for peace when they continue to discriminate against Israel at their Embassy and will not even shake Israelis’ hands. The definition of partner is “a player on the same side or team as another”. I have major reservations being on the same team as someone who fails to treat their “partners” equitably.
