Jewish Unity
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit with a prominent politician. We started to talk about all kinds of issues. He tried to convert me to becoming a Republican, as I am a conservative Democrat.
Of course, most of the conversation centered around Israel, particularly the plight of the three Israeli Soldiers currently held captive. This politician inquired if he could ask me a frank question-“what is the secret to Jewish Unity? Most Jews have never met these boys and do not even speak their language, yet the Jewish people around the world are obsessed with their fate.” I considered his question for a moment and said, “The next time you walk into a Jewish Day School go to the pre- school, take a Jewish prayer book and throw it on the floor”.
The politician looked at me as though I were mad and asked, “Why would I do that?” I replied, “Because within seconds, one of the 4 year olds will pick it up and kiss it. In that prayer book you will find many prayers to G-d asking him to love and take care of his people. Our children are taught to love each and every Jew from the womb. That is our secret- so simple, yet so special.
