Inspiring alumnus story at this year's West Coast Winter Regional Shabbaton
B"H yet another successful shabbaton hosted at the LAX Hilton in LA. We filled the hotel with over 350 students from North to South that enjoyed non-stop programming with a powerful multimedia based on Emunas Hashem. I felt it was important for me to write you and share with you yet another “hashgcha pratis” story that seems to fall in our lap at this hotel.
Friday night there were a group of pilots that checked into the hotel for the night as is the common occurrence since we are 3 minutes from the airport. After they checked in one of the pilots saw many kipot and was curious what was going on that was so special this weekend. He continued walking into the foyer and heard beautiful singing from all of our students during our oneg shabbos. The pilot, around 50 years old, stopped Irwin Nachimson and Yudi Hochheisser and asked in hebrew, “Is this a chanuka mesiba?” Irwin shook his head. The pilot continued in English,"oh, it must be NCSY, I was a part of the New England region when I was in high school.” This obviously led to a lengthy discussion. The next day he joined our shabbos beis medrash session and lunch which gave us all a chance to get to know him a lot better. He is the only Israeli pilot for Continental and on purpose he uses the name Moshe Weinberg. He explained to us that he is so proud of being a Jew that he didn’t want to change his name though he is an official federal agent and a pilot. He told us that NCSY was a very strong part of his Jewish identity and really kept him focused as a teenager.
We introduced him to the kids at the shabbaton and everyone walked over to him and wished him a good shabbos. He was glowing from excitement of NCSY’s continued success and promised that he would make it his business to fly in for our upcoming spring convention and stay for the entire shabbos!
